Applying for financial support
When and how to apply for loans, grants and bursaries
You should apply as soon as you've applied for your course - don't wait for a firm offer.
- Apply online at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance
- Or you can contact Student Finance England for a paper application form.
Application forms are usually available by the December before you're due to start.
Student Finance England will confirm if you qualify for a loan or grant once you've sent off the form.
We don't ask you to apply separately for our bursaries as we use the information you give to Student Finance England to check your eligibility.
In order for us to do this, you must consent to share your information, please read the relevant page on the application form carefully and follow the instructions given.
If you're eligible you'll receive a letter from October onwards confirming your entitlement and payment details. The bursary will then be paid to you automatically.
Return the forms as soon as you can
You must make sure you apply before the deadlines so that your money is available at the start of term.
Getting a bank account
You should set up a student bank account as early as possible - shop around to find the best deal for you. Your loan, grant or bursary will not be paid into your account until you have enrolled, so you'll need money to get you to university and to support you until the funds are cleared.
