  • A joint honours degree is the perfect choice for you if you want to study more than one subject. You can combine Zoology with one or two other joint honours courses that are offered at our Derby Campus to create your own joint honours degree.
  • You can combine this course with subjects including education studies, English, geography, environmental hazards, law, theatre studies and many more. This allows you to keep your options open and study what you're most interested in.
  • Our teaching team has been rated as 'excellent' by recent quality inspectors, so you can be sure that you'll receive a high standard of teaching.
  • We work closely with the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, and they provide access to their reserves which you'll use as part of field trips. You will also be able to undertake projects with the trust for your independent study module and on a voluntary basis if you wish to.
  • You'll be able to tailor this course to your own interests by choosing from a wide variety of modules covering a diverse range of topics.
  • You'll have the chance to participate in fieldwork in the UK and abroad which will help you to put the theory you learn into practice.

About this course

This course focuses on animal biology, such as vertebrate and invertebrate biology, molecular biology, genetics and pgysiology. You'll also cover topics, such as wildlife conservation, ecology and animal behaviour, to give you a broad knowledge of zoology.

You will taught with students studying BSc (Hons) Zoology, but the modules you'll study will depend on how you decide to combine the joint honours courses you choose.

Most of our teaching team are active researchers, like Dr Karim Vahed who is a world expert in the sexual behaviour of invertebrates. You'll also be taught by visiting professionals, at the moment this includes Professor George McGavin, a celebrated scientist, author and TV presenter of the BBC wildlife programmes.

Entry requirements

Our entry requirements are usually 220-300 UCAS points, of which at least 200-240 will be from your core A2s (full A levels) or equivalent qualifications such as BTEC Diploma, International Baccalaureate, Scottish Highers etc. including Grade C at Biology, Chemistry or Applied Science or a Science related BTEC/Access Diploma.

We'll accept up to 60 points towards the total from level 3 qualifications such as AS levels (where those AS levels are not taken on to A2 level), the Extended Project or Music qualifications.

We don't accept points from Key Skills Level 3. If you have any questions about what is or isn't accepted, please contact our Admissions team.

We also accept the Access to HE Diploma.

Your points at level 3 will be in addition to 5 GCSEs at grade C or equivalent level 2 qualifications.

The UCAS tariff points are a guide - we'll also consider all the information that you've included in your application. We'll also want to see that you're enthusiastic and motivated to take this course and that you have the potential to benefit from coming to university.

This is a resource intensive course.

UK/EU students

Full time:

  • If you combine this subject with a classroom based subject it will cost £7,700 per year.
  • If you combine this subject with another resource intensive subject or a specialist subject it will cost £8,250 per year.

We'll be announcing our part time and international fees for 2013/14 later in the year.

Careers and employability

When you've completed this course, you'll have developed a wide range of transferrable skills that are valued by many employers. These include analytical skills to interpret scientific data, written communication skills to produce reports and projects, and project management skills from organising and undertaking experiments and research projects.

You could find work as an ecologist, marine scientist, environmental consultant, nature conservation officer, and many other areas where the degree would be useful such as a biomedical scientist for example. You could also go into teaching, conduct research, work in the museums service, conservation agencies, the scientific civil service, the media, or the environmental and ecosystem management sector, when you graduate.
