About this course

If you’re interested in areas such as sport coaching, sport development, sport management and the social aspects of sport then this course is an excellent choice for you. Enhancing your employability through work placements and internship opportunities is a key part of this course. You will also be assigned your own personal tutor who will support you and help structure your personal development and career planning.

During this course you'll have lots of opportunities to do practical work in our excellent sports facilities. Our physiology laboratory contains the latest equipment for testing and measuring health and fitness, and you'll use a range of computer software packages for performance and statistical analysis. You'll find some of the best lifting equipment available in our strength and conditioning room. We've also got treatment and specialist assessment rooms in our Clinical Skills Suite. And you'll also use our sports hall, outdoor pitches, floodlit synthetic football and hockey pitch and a health and fitness suite during the course.

You'll be taught by sport experts, including accredited physiologists, strength and conditioning coaches, sport development specialists and psychologists. You'll also get specialist tuition from exercise, health and business experts, to help you to develop as an all-round sport professional.

During the course, you'll have the opportunity to do a work placement in a sport and exercise organisation, such as a school or sports facility. You'll be able to put the knowledge and skills you've developed during the course into practice and gain experience that will be essential in today's job market.

You'll be assessed through your written reports and essays, oral presentations and demonstrations, exams, problem solving activities and practical work.

What you will cover

Entry requirements

Our entry requirements are usually 260-300 UCAS points from A levels,  including at least a C in Biology or PE, or equivalent qualifications such as a BTEC National Diploma, Scottish Highers etc. You'll also need a grade C in English Language, Maths and a Science subject at GCSE or equivalent. If you've completed an Access/Foundation course, we also accept these qualifications.

The UCAS tariff points are a guide - we'll also consider all the information that you've included in your application. We'll also want to see that you're enthusiastic and motivated to take this course and that you have the potential to benefit from coming to university.

This is a resource intensive course.

UK/EU students

Full time:

  • If you combine this subject with a classroom based subject it will cost £7,700 per year.
  • If you combine this subject with another resource intensive subject it will cost £8,250 per year.

Part time:

  • If you combine this subject with a classroom based subject it will cost £965 per module, (you'll usually take 18 of these in total).
  • If you combine this subject with another resource intensive subject it will cost £1,030 per module, (you'll usually take 18 of these in total).

 

International students

Full time:

  • If you combine this subject with a classroom based subject it will cost £9,945 per year.
  • If you combine this subject with another resource intensive subject or a specialist subject it will cost £10,225 per year.

How you will learn

Assessment methods are designed to test a range of industry relevant skills. Students will be assessed through individual coursework assignments, examinations, groupwork, practical work, oral presentations and poster presentations.

You will learn through lectures, seminars, practicals and technology-enhanced innovations. You will be involved in coaching sessions, management case studies and community sport development work.

How you're assessed

You will be assessed in a variety of ways to test your knowledge, skills and practical ability. These could be individual or group assessments in our new specialised facilities. For all assessments you will receive clear guidance on what is required of you to enable you to achieve to your potential.

Work placements

Work-based learning is an element in several of the modules.

Careers and employability

Recent graduates have secured jobs in coaching, sport development, teaching, the fitness industry, sport management or sport media and marketing. You could teach Physical Education at secondary level by completing relevant postgraduate training, or study our MRes in Sport and Exercise, enabling you to gain skills in teaching and research, with the potential to progress to PhD level.

When you graduate you could work as a sport development officer or a coach for one of the national governing bodies or local authorities. Or you could join the police force or armed services, or become a personal trainer or lifestyle coach. Take a look at how we will help you to improve your employability.

If you want to carry on studying you could take a masters course or postgraduate training to become a sport teacher or a physiotherapist.
