About this course

This course is a great way to get back into education and studying.

You'll take three subjects: English, Study Skills and Learning Styles, and focus on your own personal development.

You'll improve your reading and writing skills during this course, so you will start to feel more confident when you're asked to write essays and reports.

During the Study Skills module, you'll develop your academic skills in areas such as research and presentation skills, understand essay structuring, learn time management and engage with teamworking.

You will work both on your own and in a group, giving you the opportunity to meet new people and become familiar with university life.

When you have successfully completed this course you will be able to apply for the Access to Higher Education Diploma or Foundation Programme - Joint Honours, which will give you an entry qualification for university at degree level.

What you will cover

You will study these modules:

  • English - we'll help you with some of those things you never quite mastered at school.
  • Study Skills - you'll develop your academic study skills and build up your confidence.
  • Learning Styles - you'll explore how you learn most effectively and how you can develop your skills using different learning styles.

Entry requirements

You don't need any formal qualifications to apply.

Careers and employability

This course could be your first step to getting a place at university or taking professional qualifications in nursing, health, teaching or social work.

You could chose to train to be a teacher like Ciaran Fallon, who studied a history degree after completing the Foundation Programme - Joint Honours. Or if you're more interested in working with the community, you could become a social worker or probation officer like Steve Brown, who completed professional training after the Access to Higher Education Diploma.

What our students say

"I found that my spelling and grammar were my weakest link, so I spoke to my personal tutor who managed to get me my own mentor, which has been a great help." Paul Sharman, who is now studying the Access to Higher Education Diploma.

"The Rising Skills programme was the best thing I ever did. I made lots of new friends and gained the confidence to apply for the Access course. I hope to go on to train as an Occupational Therapist." Lisa Ball-Wood
