About this course

This course will enable you to develop an applied approach, underpinned by theory, to the evaluation and resolution of production engineering requirements and problems.

You'll focus on the technology, quality issues, project management, manufacture and health and safety issues pertaining to the relevant industries.

The significant workbased learning element is covered in several ways, in order to maintain a clear link between theory and practice.

The core workbased learning modules aim to develop your understanding of the working environment, and to develop your professional qualifications. You will be encouraged to negotiate work related projects with both your employer and the College Tutors.

Accreditation to Engineering Technician/Partial I.Eng level is in the process of being sought via the I.Mech.E (Institution of Mechanical Engineers).

You'll develop skills in the key areas of:

  • Manufacturing technology
  • Engineering Science and Mathematics
  • Management, including current management techniques and theories
  • Risk management, supplier relations and financial controls
  • Quality and Quality Assurance methodologies and management

What you will cover

You'll study a total of 120 credits per year. This will be made up of single or double modules.

Year one

  •    Management of The Business Environment (WBL)
  •    Manufacturing Systems (WBL)
  •    Applied Scientific Methods
  •    Regulatory Systems (WBL)


Year two

  •    Operations Management
  •    Project Foundation Degree - Production Engineering (WBL)
  •    Corporate Responsibility and Professional Development (WBL)
  •    Environmental Management (WBL)
  •    Innovation and Engineering Context
  •    Advanced Applied Analytical Methods
  •    Industrial Control Systems

Entry requirements

Our entry requirements are usually 160 UCAS points, of which at least 120 will be from your core A2s (full A levels) or equivalent qualifications such as BTEC Diploma, International Baccalaureate, Scottish Highers etc.

We'll accept up to 40 points towards the total from level 3 qualifications such as AS levels (where those AS levels are not taken on to A2 level), the Extended Project or Music qualifications.

We don't accept points from Key Skills Level 3. If you have any questions about what is or isn't accepted, please contact our Admissions team.

We also accept the Access to HE Diploma.

Your points at level 3 will be in addition to 5 GCSEs at grade C or equivalent level 2 qualifications.

The UCAS tariff points are a guide - we'll also consider all the information that you've included in your application. We'll also want to see that you're enthusiastic and motivated to take this course and that you have the potential to benefit from coming to university.

This is a resource intensive course.

  • Part time: £935 per module (you usually take 12 of these modules in total)

How you will learn

How you'll learn

Delivery is split on a roughly 50/50 basis between taught modules at Castle College and Work Based Learning modules, where you'll undertake specific negotiated projects that will be of benefit to both your employer as well as your own learning experience.

How you're assessed

Predominantly the assessments are coursework based but there are some taught modules that are assessed using a mix of both examinations and coursework.

Careers and employability

On completion of this course you will have the knowledge and skills that enable you to engage with continuing professional development and further study in the disciplines of Production Engineering.  You could go on to study the BEng (Hons) Manufacturing and Production Engineering.

You'll have transferable communication skills, including written, verbal and new media presentation skills which will aid you in your future career.  You'll also have gained the skills to become an independent learner, developing as an individual for the rest of your life.

You can then progress within the field of manufacturing engineering, lean engineering and in applications of advanced materials.
