If you are currently working in Local Government, the NHS, the voluntary sector or another organisation with public health functions and would like to go on to practice public health in the UK or overseas, then this course is for you. You may be a public health worker, such as a community nurse, environmental health officer, health promotion officer or community health worker. You'll develop the skills and knowledge you'll need to become a public health practitioner, who can lead, develop and evaluate public health projects in a multi-disciplinary environment.
You'll gain an understanding of the underlying causes and mechanisms, and potential public health intervention strategies which are aimed at improving health inequalities. The course is global in its perspective and studying the Global Environmental and Public Health Issues module means you'll gain a worldwide perspective on public health concerns. The course is structured to allow you to share knowledge with other students from a range of international backgrounds, enabling you to benefit from global best practice.
We run this course in partnership with Public Health Derby, and specialists will mentor and support you throughout the course and with your research. There will also be opportunities for you to undertake work experience with them allowing you to experience at first hand the public health function and gain a greater understanding of public health practice.
This course has been specifically designed for public health community based practitioners and is equal to level 7 of the Public Health Skills and Career Framework 2008, produced by the Public Health Resource Unit. This is a practice based course which does not provide readiness for the Faculty of Public Health Part A Examination, although you will cover aspects of this.
