About this course

If you are currently working in Local Government, the NHS, the voluntary sector or another organisation with public health functions and would like to go on to practice public health in the UK or overseas, then this course is for you. You may be a public health worker, such as a community nurse, environmental health officer, health promotion officer or community health worker. You'll develop the skills and knowledge you'll need to become a public health practitioner, who can lead, develop and evaluate public health projects in a multi-disciplinary environment.

You'll gain an understanding of the underlying causes and mechanisms, and potential public health intervention strategies which are aimed at improving health inequalities. The course is global in its perspective and studying the Global Environmental and Public Health Issues module means you'll gain a worldwide perspective on public health concerns. The course is structured to allow you to share knowledge with other students from a range of international backgrounds, enabling you to benefit from global best practice.

We run this course in partnership with Public Health Derby, and specialists will mentor and support you throughout the course and with your research. This course has been specifically designed for public health community based practitioners and is equal to level 7 of the Public Health Skills and Career Framework 2008, produced by the Public Health Resource Unit. This is a practice based course which does not provide readiness for the Faculty of Public Health Part A Examination, although you will cover aspects of this.

Entry requirements

You'll usually need an undergraduate degree (at least second class) in a public health related subject or an equivalent qualification.

Fees and finance

You'll study the equivalent of nine 20 credit modules in total. Course fees for 2013/14 will be available in late 2012 - check our website for details.

How you will learn

How you'll learn

There will be lectures, seminars and tutorials using practice and research based approaches. In addition, technology based support, instruction and assessment will be integral to the course.

Careers and employability

When you successfully complete this course, you will have the autonomy and expertise to lead and coordinate in areas of public health, gaining senior health sector posts in organisations such as Public Health England, local authorities, and community organisations.
