  • This course builds on 11 years' experience of training in Systemic Practice at Derby.
  • Our course team are skilled systemic therapists who practise in a variety of agency settings and so offer contemporary theory and practice.
  • It's aimed at multi-agency, multi-professional participants who work with a range of client groups presenting a range of challenges, symptoms, issues or difficulties.
  • There's an emphasis on creating a safe group context both in the academic and clinical aspects of the course, to facilitate learning.
  • The research appraisal half module is delivered jointly with participants from Postgraduate Certificate programmes in different models, for example Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy which offers the opportunity to view research issues from many perspectives.
  • The course is accredited by the Association for Family Therapy (AFT) at Intermediate level.
  • Following successful completion of the course, you would be eligible to carry on training to Clinical MSc level.

About this course

The course would be of interest to you if you wish to extend your knowledge of systemic practice and if you have successfully completed the University Advanced Diploma in Systemic Practice and Family Therapy or equivalent Foundation level training. The Postgraduate Certificate will enhance your knowledge and skills and is accredited as intermediate level training. It's taught in a modular programme.

What you will cover

You’ll study these modules:

Systemic Theory and Practice 1 (20 credits)
This module is designed to bring together systemic concepts and make links to practice. You’ll consider key systemic models and frameworks in depth and in relation to your current practice base. This module is delivered face to face.

Systemic Theory and Practice 2 (20 credits)
This module focuses on bringing the skills of critical analysis to professional practice. You’ll critically analyse the impact of
applying systemic principles in practice and develop the ability to discuss systemic practice and theory in both oral and written forms. This module is delivered face to face.

Systemic Personal and Professional Development 1 (20 credits)
You’ll develop the skills you’ll need to become a reflexive practitioner, paying attention to key systemic practices and applying them. You’ll be encouraged to reflect on all aspects of your systemic development. This module is delivered face to face.

Entry requirements

You'll need to have successfully completed the University Advanced Diploma in Systemic Practice and Family Therapy or equivalent Foundation level training.

Fees and finance

This is a classroom based course.

UK/EU students

  • Part time: £695 per module (you usually take 3 of these modules in total)

  • Lectures and reading seminars to develop your knowledge base and enhance critical faculties
  • Experiential exercises to develop your skills, application of ideas and self-reflexivity
  • Skills practice work to enhance your skills and promote application of ideas at work
  • Small group personal and professional development work to develop self reflexivity and skills
  • Seminars to support your learning
  • Self-supported study

How you're assessed

You'll complete assignments to demonstrate learning and application of ideas.

Careers and employability

Each year of the Systemic Practice framework builds upon the last and is aimed at offering a strong theoretical underpinning of theory applied to practice settings.

This course is suitable for you if you wish to extend your knowledge and practice of systemic theory and family therapy ideas in the workplace. It's suitable for people who work in a variety of agency settings in statutory and non government projects and across all age groups.

It's a stand alone course and it's  also the second year of a four year programme. If you have a host profession and wish to become a qualified family therapist/systemic psychotherapist, it also forms the first year of a three year programme towards the award of an MSc.
