About this course

If you're keen to develop your skills and knowledge in education within your practice setting then this course will help you to be at the forefront of professional practice education. Your current workplace will be the focus of your learning, so before you can study this course, you'll need to be able to facilitate learning in your practice environment and have the full support from your employer.

You'll experience a variety of teaching methods including a mixture of traditional learning and learning using web based and electronic tools. You'll also take part in group work and reflective practice, which means you'll consider how you have developed and applied your knowledge. You'll be assessed by your peers and the group, as well as through the reflective portfolios that you develop during the course. This will allow you to improve your practice by applying what you have learnt to your own practice.

If you study all modules on this course, then you'll meet the requirements for Nurse Teacher Status (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2008), but if you study just the first two modules then you'll gain Practice Teacher Status. Practice Teacher Status is a requiement for health visitor and school nurse mentors. It's advisable for a range of other health professional practice learning related roles, such as clinical facilitator, practice educator and skills trainer.

What you’ll study

To gain NMC Practice Teacher Status and HEA Associate Status, you’ll study this module:

  • Practice Teacher (20 credits)

For Nursing and Midwifery Council Teacher Status, HEA Fellow Status and the full PGCE, you’ll also need to study this double module:

  • Curriculum Management (40 credits)

 

Entry requirements

You need to have an existing professional qualification in an aspect of healthcare such as nursing, radiography or occupational therapy. We will also consider your application if you have experience of working in a relevant field.

  • £815 per module (you usually take 3 of these modules in total)

How you will learn

How you'll learn

You’ll learn alongside a range of health professionals, which will help you to develop the professional, academic and personal skills you’ll need in educational practice. Careers and employability

When you graduate you'll be able to effectively co-ordinate and organise a range of learning activities within practice learning environments or academic environments. You'll also be able to support interprofessional learning and working in the context of modern healthcare whilst your experience on the course will also open up a range of opportunities for employment as a clinical educator or within higher education institutions.
