About this course

There are three phases to this course:

Phase One: Entry Gateway

The personal development audit (PDA) is a reflective summary of education, qualifications, experience and competences to date.

Phase Two: Study Programme (Learning Contract)

This is your individual study programme which matches your PDA against PEI/UK SPEC requirements so that you can study as below.

Phase Three: Exit Gateway

This is either a reflective summary or an engineering project depending on your skills and needs. It also includes a viva voce.

This course is subject to approval

This course has just been created and we intend to start running it on the next start date. With every new course that we develop, we first have it checked by internal and external quality panels to make sure you get the best possible learning experience. Once these checks have been completed, this course will have been approved and the flag will disappear. There may be small changes to content of the course during this process so check back for updates to this page.

Entry requirements

You will normally require an accredited BSc/BEng(Hons) degree. Those without such a degree but with suitable industrial experience, may join the course subject to assessment.

As the course is designed to take students directly to CEng status, you must also have significant engineering experience. (Engineers applying for CEng status need to have demonstrated the ability to apply their engineering knowledge within a practical engineering environment.) For those who have an accredited first degree (either BEng or BSc) we require a minimum of two years' relevant industrial or engineering experience. For those without such a degree, we will require a greater amount of industrial experience.

You may also be able to incorporate any prior certificated learning at an equivalent level which has not already contributed towards any other award.

How you will learn

A masters degree using negotiated learning recognises the learning involved in completing work-based projects and staff development, and recognises learning that takes place at work. This allows you to be credited for what you are already learning and the contribution you are making to your organisation's success.

The modules on this course have been designed around the competencies needed for CEng, and you can design your programme around these themes. This means that you may already have skills and competencies within one of the module areas, eg Environmental and Ethical Responsibility by the implementation of ISO 9000, 14000 and 18000 into your organisation, and this module can be awarded to you by the system of Accredited Prior Experiential Learning.

You may also be able to take a standard module at the University to update your skills and these can be credited to you in place of one of the negotiated modules.  E.G. Environmetal Performance Management could be studied in place of the Negotiated Module (Environmental and Ethical Responsibility). You can also negotiate your own project in your organisation in line with the learning outcomes of the module.
