About this course

This LLM examines intellectual property and aspects of information law thematically, covering data protection, information handling, e-commerce and intellectual property in the global digital economy. In particular you will look at the protection afforded by international agreements on intellectual property and their impact on commercial activity. You'll also be examining the legal principles and procedures relating to ownership and the use and control of information in the context of the internet and other media.

This is one of the few courses in the UK that has been developed specifically for the study of the digital age. It is of particular relevance if you are currently working, or if you are aspiring to work, in the creative arts and media sectors.

You will be taught in our lecture theatres and courtrooms using a range of approaches that will emphasize the practical application of your knowledge. You'll combine academic and theoretical knowledge with practical skills, and will also be prepared as an expert witness for your future career.

Whilst you will certainly grasp the fundamentals of doing business online, you will also explore topics in a way that enables you to flexibly create your own degree, culminating in a deeper piece of independent research that will be of even greater interest to both you and your tutors.

From the start, through the Legal Scholarship module, you will be encouraged to develop your research, communication and independent learning techniques which will help you throughout your masters degree and will also assist you with your personal and professional development. This module also provides a stepping stone for you if you wish to present your work at conferences, and includes sessions relating to getting your work published.

The Clinic module is also one of the first of its type in the UK. It is a short placement relevant to the LLM (Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law), which can be, for example, in a legal practice or firm of patent attorneys dealing with intellectual property issues, or in our in-house information management team. It builds upon the success of the Clinic module at undergraduate level for which we were Highly Commended by the Attorney General.

Throughout the course you will learn with your peers, giving you the chance to collaborate with other talented people who share your passion for the same kind of legal issues. All of the module assessments can be tailored to different jursidications, which make it particularly relevant to you if you are an international student.

How you will learn

How you'll learn

You will learn in our fantastic law facilities, which include two full-sized courtrooms. Take the video tour.

You'll learn with your peers, giving you the chance to collaborate with other talented people with a passion for the same kinds of legal issues.

The course will support you to acquire the independent research and writing skills that will enable you to put together strong legal arguments in your work submissions.

Your lectures will provide a solid foundation in the areas for study. Emphasis is placed on aiding research and guiding you in a way that will stimulate your desire and interest to further explore the module area and specific topics.

The opportunity is provided, through tutorials and discussion, for you to explore topic areas and issues. Also, on an ongoing basis, you will be able to identify and pursue study areas which are of of particular interest to you.

Your tutors will highlight the value of studying a particular module in isolation to develop your knowledge and understanding in this area. The provision of the module in the context of the LLM pathway as a whole will be acknowledged and account taken of the link and relationship with other modules you are studying.

How you're assessed

Types of assessment are wide ranging and include assignments, portfolio preparation, reports, case studies and online preparation of material. In several modules you can relate your assessment to different jurisdictions, so that your national law can be the focus of your award.

Assessment is integrated into the learning and teaching of modules. The loading and scheduling of work is consistent, balanced and inclusive in line with your progressive development.

The final masters stage is assessed through the submission of your Independent Study or masters thesis on a specialist topic of your own choosing. You will be supported in preparing this by your tutors here at Derby.

Careers and employability

If you are looking to enter into legal practice with a specialism in intellectual property or information technology law, the LLM (Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law) will be of significant benefit to your career.

On the other hand, if you have responsibility for intellectual property and/or information management issues, or if you work in an advisory capacity helping businesses to tackle these kinds of issues, the LLM will widen your knowledge and skills so that you are more effective and successful in your field.

The LLM is also useful if you are considering a career as a researcher in the legal field, or as an analyst for an intellectual property or knowledge management campaign group or think tank. You might already be working as a research manager where a greater knowledge of intellectual property would be of great value to you.

Alternatively, you may wish to continue your studies, focusing on your area of interest through an MPhil or PhD in the School of Law and Criminology.
