About this course
It's 52 weeks long and is made up of 50% theory and 50% practice in a placement.
As a Postgraduate Diploma student, by the end of the course, we expect that you'll:
- have the skills to become an Advanced Practitioner in your own area of expertise

- be able to demonstrate a critical understanding in clinical practice, care and programme management, clinical practice leadership, and clinical practice development

- have skills and a critical knowledge of research and evidence based practice so you can influence and deliver high quality care.
As well as those things listed above, as an MSc student, we expect that you'll carry out an extended, innovative and critical research about the theory and practice of your chosen award.
What you will cover
This course is made up of two stages – Postgraduate Diploma and MSc.
Postgraduate Diploma
To achieve a recordable qualification in district nursing, you’ll study modules such as:
- Specialist Professional Issues in Continued ProfessionalDevelopment (40 credits), (this is a core module which you must study)
- Leadership and Management in a Commissioning Based Healthcare Environment (20 credits)
- Public Health (20 credits)
- Research Methodology – Application to Advanced Practice (20 credits)
And you’ll choose one optional module which could include:
- Child and Adolescent Mental Health (20 credits)
- Introduction to Health Promotion and Health Improvement (20 credits)
- Principles of Long Term Condition Management (20 credits)
- Strategic and Clinical Management of Long Term Conditions (20 credits)
MSc
You’ll study this module:
- Independent Scholarship (60 credits)
Entry requirements
You should:
- have an entry on an appropriate part of the NMC Register
- be employed by the Primary Care Trusts providing sponsorship
- have 120 credits at degree level or equivalent academic credits or Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)
- be working in an area which enables achievement of the individual pathway aims and module learning outcomes.
If you're undertaking a recordable pathway, you must have completed a period of sufficient length to have consolidated pre-registration outcomes and to have gained a deeper understanding in relevant professional practice. This will normally be one year.
It will be the employer's responsibility to ensure that any necessary CRB and health checks are carried out before confirming the offer of a course place.
