Science and Instrumentation of Bone Densitometry - Level 7
About this module
The development of X-ray equipment able to image and quantify the measurement and assessment of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) has evolved rapidly. This is due to the recognition of osteoporosis as a major bony disease and the requirement to establish high levels of precision and accuracy in the measurement process.
The diversity of imaging equipment for BMD assessment is extensive. There currently exists little education and training in the scientific principles regarding the operation of such equipment and evaluation of bone densitometers systems when establishing an osteoporosis service. urrently, quality assurance and testing of such equipment is varied and practitioners have little understanding as to the operation and efficient usage of hardware and software systems in the positioning and analysis of their patients.
The aim of this module is to provide you with an appreciation of the scientific principles of bone densitometers in order to inform your clinical activity and allow you to critically evaluate overall system performance.
Learning Beyond Registration
Learning Beyond Registration (LBR) is a vital part of developing competent, capable health service practitioners prepared to deliver a dynamic, flexible, quality, client-focused service. If you're employed by the NHS in the East Midlands then you may be eligible for fee-free access to our LBR modules and/or programmes. You'll need to supply evidence of approval from your line manager and Trust Education Lead when you apply.

Continuing Professional Development
CPD is a core element of every health and social care professional's development journey. We have CPD modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels (levels 6 and 7), which have all been tailored to meet the needs of practitioners and managers working within the health and social care sectors. We have modules to suit nurses, occupational therapists, hand therapists, radiographers, psychotherapists, and those working within complementary therapies.
Which professions is this module aimed at? All Health Professionals
Start dates are usually: Please contact us for the start date.
Module level: Level 7
Module credits: 20 credits
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
- Appreciate the scientific principles and characteristics of bone using ultrasound and ionising radiation.
- Understand the operating principles of bone densitometry systems and compare and contrast overall system performance.
- Critically review bone densitometry systems as part of the installation and provision of an osteoporosis unit within a primary/secondary care unit.
- Analyse factors affecting the overall measuring process critically reviewing different measures of bone mineral density.
Studying via LBR
If you're employed by the NHS in the East Midlands you may be eligible for fee-free access to out LBR modules. You'll need to supply evidence of approval from your line manager and Trust Education Lead when you apply. Find out more at www.derby.ac.uk/lbr
If you're self-funding, then the team you need to contact depends upon how you wish to study. Some modules are available online whereas others are studied on campus, through distance learning or a mixture of the two.
