About this course
If you don't want to specialise in just one area, want to impress employers with your CV, want a mix of skills to move your career on and enjoy two of you're a level subjects equally, a joint honours degree could be just for you.
You can combine HR with another subject and study it as a major, joint or minor pathway, which means that you can choose the amount of accounting modules you want to take in your degree.
The first stage will introduce you to business and HR. The second stage develops an understanding of the policies, procedures and practices of HR. You can choose to take a placement year as your third year, or move straight to the final stage where you'll be looking at HR strategies and how these link in to the overall organisation and business strategies.
We'll introduce you to recent developments in the management of people at work, developing your critical abilities and teaching you to consider managing people from a social, cultural and political point of view. We'll also develop your personal skills throughout the course. From group working and time management through to report writing and presentation skills, we'll equip you not only with the subject knowledge, but also with the personal, transferable skills that are vital to your career and which you need to be successful in the graduate job market.
Our team members are active in research and consultancy in both HRM and organisational psychology, all of which informs your studies, so you're up to date with the latest HR issues.

Entry requirements
Our entry requirements are usually 220-300 UCAS points, of which at least 200-240 will be from your core A2s (full A levels) or equivalent qualifications such as BTEC Diploma, International Baccalaureate, Scottish Highers etc.
We'll accept up to 60 points towards the total from level 3 qualifications such as AS levels (where those AS levels are not taken on to A2 level), the Extended Project or Music qualifications.
We don't accept points from Key Skills Level 3. If you have any questions about what is or isn't accepted, please contact our Admissions team.
We also accept the Access to HE Diploma.
Your points at level 3 will be in addition to 5 GCSEs at grade C or equivalent level 2 qualifications.
The UCAS tariff points are a guide - we'll also consider all the information that you've included in your application. We'll also want to see that you're enthusiastic and motivated to take this course and that you have the potential to benefit from coming to university.
Fees and finance
Fees for 2013/14
This is a classroom based course.
UK/EU students
Full time:
- If you combine this subject with another classroom based subject or a resource intensive subject it will cost £7,700 per year.
- If you combine this subject with a specialist subject it will cost £8,250 per year.
We'll be announcing our part time and international fees for 2013/14 later in the year.

How you will learn
How you'll learn
All modules involve the discussion and application of underlying concepts. You will produce your ideas in a variety of formats and as you advance through your studies you will be able to introduce more analytical tools and techniques to analyse and interpret information. In stage two and three there's an increasing emphasis on independent learning with more student led seminars and directed study aided by self-directed learning.
How you're assessed
Assessment is by a combination of case studies, learning logs and reflective portfolios, computer assessments, group projects, individual assignments.The variety of assessment methods allows you plenty of opportunity to demonstrate the development of your technical skills.

Anything else?
Guest lectures and case study scenarios are used to supplement tutor support in various modules.
You'll develop your practical business and study skills by an interactive seminar programme.
Careers and employability
- We'll prepare you for a range of careers in HRM in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Your first role will be a junior HR role, from which you can develop through progression and professional accreditation in your field.
- Your career progression can be enhanced even further by supplementing your degree with CIPD professional qualifications or you can choose to study for a masters qualification here in Derby Business School.
