About this course

You'll develop a thorough understanding of the process of civil engineering technical design and management. You'll be introduced to key design skills in structures, fluids, geology, soil mechanics, surveying and materials. This course will also enhance your skills in advanced areas of civil engineering theory, particularly structures and infrastructure design.

This degree is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). You can visit www.jbm.org.uk  for further information. This will lead to Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (MCIHT) and the Institute of Highway Engineers (MIHE) following a period of relevant experience and a professional review. It's also accredited by The Engineering Council.

If you don't have the appropriate qualifications to start this course, you can study the Technology Foundation Programme for a year first.

What you will cover

Entry requirements

Our entry requirements are usually 260 UCAS points, of which at least 220 will be from your core A2s (full A levels) or equivalent qualifications such as BTEC Diploma, International Baccalaureate, Scottish Highers etc.

We'll accept up to 40 points towards the total from level 3 qualifications such as AS levels (where those AS levels are not taken on to A2 level), the Extended Project or Music qualifications.

We don't accept points from Key Skills Level 3. If you have any questions about what is or isn't accepted, please contact our Admissions team.

We also accept the Access to HE Diploma.

Your points at level 3 will be in addition to 5 GCSEs at grade C or equivalent level 2 qualifications.

The UCAS tariff points are a guide - we'll also consider all the information that you've included in your application. We'll also want to see that you're enthusiastic and motivated to take this course and that you have the potential to benefit from coming to university.

Lectures, seminars, tutorials, on and off site laboratory and site work and visits to companies.

How you're assessed

Workshop laboratories, surveying field work, groupwork and individual assignments. Some traditional exams maybe involved for design tests.

Careers and employability

When you graduate, you'll have lots of career opportunities in civil engineering in fields such as design, maintenance, asset management and construction. You could work in private companies which specialise in contracting or consulting, for local authorities, water companies, Network Rail or the Highways Agency, for example. Or you may choose to continue your studies by taking a postgraduate course in order to gain Chartered Engineer status.A Chartered Engineer is a person with an accredited Bachelor Degree and MSc (or MEng) and experience who can develop appropriate solutions to engineering problems, use new or existing technologies through innovation, creativity and change; introduce new and more efficient production techniques, marketing and construction concepts, or pioneer new engineering services and management methods.  The qualification is essential to be a lead principal associate practicing engineer and director, in a professional organisation.

You can gain valuable industry experience on an optional work placement between stages two and three.  You'll also gain an additional qualification, the Diploma in Professional Practice. Find out more about placements.
