About this course

This course is for anyone who is already working within social work and need the relevant qualification in order to register as a qualified social worker. You'll need to be in employment whilst you study this course and you'll also need the support of your employer so that they can agree study leave and support you throughout the course. This course will provide you with all the relevant skills and theories that will enable you to work as a qualified social worker in your current workplace and a range of other settings.

As a social work student, you'll need to register with the social work profession's regulator and we'll help you to work to the standards set out in the Code of Practice for Social Workers. By working to these standards, you can be sure that you'll be ready to go into the social work sector as a qualified social worker.

You can gain a qualification after you've completed each stage of the course. So even if you step off the course at stage one or two you'll still be awarded either a Certificate or a Diploma of Higher Education in Social Care Studies. You'll study a mixture of theory and practice on the course. You'll complete most of the theory based modules here at the university and through online learning, whilst the practice based modules will take place in your current workplace setting. You'll spend a total of 200 days in practice during the course. You'll have 50 days in practice during stage one, 70 days during stage two and 80 days in stage three. This means you'll be well prepared for the new agendas in the workplace such as integrated service provision.

A social work degree is now the recognised qualification for all social workers and when you complete this course you'll be able to register with the General Social Care Council (GSCC) as a qualified social worker.

When you've completed the course and you become a qualified social worker, you'll also be expected to continue with your professional development to keep your skills and knowledge up to date with trends in the sector. We offer a post qualifying course in Interprofessional Practice Education for Social Workers which will allow you to apply for positions as a practice teacher within your workplace.
