Understanding Forensic Science
About the course
Forensic science is a vital element of crime scene investigation. On this short course you will learn the fundamentals of forensics, how it is used in criminal proceedings and some of the techniques that can be used. From managing an investigation through to the highly detailed biological elements, you will get a good understanding of the art of forensic science.
This course is based on other University of Derby programmes which are accredited by the Forensic Science Society, endorsed by Forensic Skillsmark and recognised by the Royal Society for Chemistry.

- The different aspects of forensic science.
- The process of carrying out a forensic investigation, including evidence collection techniques such as fingerprinting and document analysis.
- An overview of the chemistry techniques used to analyse a crime scene, such as toxicology.
- The biological principles of forensic science including the use of hairs and fibres and the analysis and interpretation of blood spatter patterns.
- The position of forensics in criminal proceedings.
