New 'Event Control' Course Boosts Industry Skills

9 February 2012

Event professionals looking to broaden their skills can undertake a new 'Working in an Event Control' course, offered through the recently launched Centre for Events Professional Development (CEPD), part of University of Derby Corporate (UDC).

The 'Event Control' is the hub for ensuring effective communication, coordination and control across a broad range of events including sports, community, concerts and festivals.

The course commences with a workshop taking place at UDC's Enterprise Centre in Derby city centre on March 1 and 2. It uses event control scenarios and case studies from industry, and is being delivered in partnership with MRL Safety Ltd, an established company with experience in delivering control room operations.

Under the guidance of Judy Jackson, Managing Director of MRL Safety Ltd, and Ron Woodham, Director of Contingency Solutions Ltd, attendees will gain a detailed overview of event control operations and the planning behind their use.

Learning will continue online and with specialist tutor support to develop a detailed Event Control Plan which is based the attendees work place.

They'll develop the specific skills required to work in an event control and gain a recognised University award, worth 20 credits, that forms part of their continuing professional development.

Conor Moss, Head of Learning Solutions at University of Derby Corporate, said: "This is the first academic course that combines theory and practice. The content has been based around practical workshops and realistic event scenarios so it offers direct vocational value which can be immediately applied to real life. It's ideal for anyone who recognises the importance of professional development and is looking to refresh or enhance their skills."

In addition to gaining as much practical experience as possible, learning is also supported with a preparatory workbook detailing the legislative responsibilities of an event control.

Attendees will also be able to establish a network of professional contacts, and the alumni of the CEPD, focused through University of Derby Corporate, will bring forward the opportunities for further professional and personal development.

The Centre for Event Professionals Development at University of Derby Corporate is a leading provider of events management courses, specifically designed for people working within the industry who want to achieve a professional qualification.

Each course is supported through UDC's links with leading national and international employers in the events industry, which ensures they remain relevant and in line with industry developments.
