About the course
The Event Control is the hub for ensuring effective communication, coordination and control across a broad range of events including a variety of sports, community events, concerts and festivals.
Staffing of a Control brings together competent individuals from the key agencies who can maintain an accurate real time appreciation of an event, and who can apply appropriate responses to crises and emergencies should they occur.
It is vital that as well as utilising suitable information management systems, a Control also maintains an audit trail to include planning arrangements, incidents and actions taken, deployment of personnel and decisions taken.
On this course you will explore these issues as well as considering the appropriate facilities, layout, equipping and staffing of such control rooms so that this can be applied in to your own working environment.
You will examine current industry guidance and research, including the Event Safety Guide, Safety at Sports Grounds and Understanding Crowd Behaviour (2009 Emergency Planning College). You will then apply this to real life situations, examining how you can improve performance and outcome in a structured way which can then be transferred to your own events.
On completion you will have developed the specific skills required to work in Event Control, providing a recognised qualification that forms part of your continuing professional development. You will be able to:
- Assess the relevance of key legislation and guidance to event control operations
- Explain the roles, responsibilities of, and importance of the key interface(s) between, key agencies and partners
- Explain the processes, and their role, in relation to decision making in the contingency and emergency responses.

What our students say
"I joined the course to learn more about the theory and planning behind a control room. The information was current and relevant - I haven't been involved in many large scale events yet so it was a real eye opener for me. I now feel I can understand more and become more involved in the planning stages."
Laura Collins
"I've really enjoyed the course and will use it to influence my new regional role as an Events Manager, looking at how we improve our processes and standards."
Larry Sherratt
How you'll learn
On this course you will gain a detailed overview of event control operations and the planning behind their use. You will start with a two day workshop at Derby using event control scenarios and case studies from industry. Key issues and practical workshops allow scope for individual queries, so you gain as much practical experience as possible applying event control principles and arrangements against a realistic event scenario.
Your learning is supported with a preparatory workbook detailing the legislative responsibilities of an event control.
You will then be supported by online materials and specialist tutor support to develop your specific Event Control Plan. You will need to submit this within four months of the course commencement.
How you're assessed
You will produce an Event Control Plan for a real event, and take part in a scenario role play assessment, including a debriefing exercise, based on workshop activities.
You will also undertake a time constrained online multiple choice assessment.
