Workforce Development Fellow

Nilam Prinjha

I joined University of Derby Corporate in August 2008 as the Workforce Development Fellow attached to the Faculty of Education, Health and Sciences. In particular, I work alongside the Faculty's School of Health and the Social Care subject area (formerly part of the School of Social Care and Therapeutic Practice).

Within this role, I have managed the design and delivery of teaching and education to employers involved in social care as well as the NHS. This has included, for example, the design and delivery of short courses for medical consultants on behalf of the East Midlands Healthcare Workforce Deanery; accredited undergraduate level programmes for the social care workforce; and supporting the accreditation of postgraduate level programmes in patient safety and quality improvement in health services.

Since UDC was launched in 2008, together with staff from the University's School of Health Sciences, I have successfully secured and delivered the University of Derby's first contract within Medical Education, and also presented this work at both a regional and international conference.

My background is in the health and social care sector. Prior to my role at UDC, I worked extensively within drugs and alcohol services in the north west of England. As Senior Health Promotion Officer with Trafford Substance Misuse Service and Training Co-ordinator with Manchester Drug Service, I was responsible for the design and delivery of training and education on aspects of substance misuse, including accredited courses delivered in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University. My responsibilities also included leading on a Greater Manchester-wide workforce initiative with drugs services and Manchester City College to establish an apprenticeship scheme within the drugs and alcohol sector.

Whilst employed as Senior Lecturer with the Centre for Ethnicity and Health, University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), I was responsible for managing and delivering a number of research contracts in the area of substance misuse. My role at UCLan also included designing and delivering both undergraduate and masters level programmes in the area of equality and diversity within the health and social care sector.
