Brave volunteers are taking part in sports science research at the University of Derby - exploring pain thresholds. Around 18 sports enthusiasts signed up to the study this summer being conducted by scientist Dr Peter Jones and colleagues.

During the experiments in a Kedleston Road laboratory, participants were asked to ride on an exercise bike for different lengths of time. Before hitting the saddle, a shin guard with a wooden dowel inside was strapped against their shins. A blood pressure gauge then increased the pressure and the pain they were exposed to.

Volunteers were tested to see how much pain they could endure both before and after exercising. Sports scientists are now analysing the data to see if there is a correlation between exercise helping to increase the pain threshold of individuals. Connected will feature the results of the study in the next few months.
