Clocking Up A Towering Success

The three towers at the University's Kedleston Road site have been given a sleek new look which will also benefit the environment by saving on energy bills.
A finishing touch for them has been the addition of a stylish clock, on the side of the North Tower, designed and built by expert clockmaker Smith of Derby. Former Blue Peter presenter and honorary graduate Simon Groom was guest of honour at an event on June 11, 2010 to officially open the towers and unveil the clock -- and was greeted by a mystery tune.
The ceremony took place on the roof of the Multi-Faith Centre, and Simon also unveiled a plaque at the base of the south tower to mark the official opening of the towers. School pupil Amy White won a competition to help design the clock and attended the launch with friends and a tutor from Chellaston School. Earlier this year, the group had been invited to Smith of Derby's headquarters to see the clock in production.
