This year's Flamsteed Lecture – entitled The Cosmic Web – is given by an expert in cosmology (the science of our universe) Professor Peter Coles, former Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Nottingham and now Professor of Theoretical Astrophysics in the School of Physics and Astronomy, at Cardiff University.
The free annual public lecture series – named after the 17th century Derbyshire scientist John Flamsteed, Britain's first Astronomer Roya, was founded by the University of Derby in 1996. Past speakers have included Sir Martin (now Lord) Rees, President of the Royal Society, and in 2007 Professor Colin Pillinger, former head of the European Mars Express mission Beagle 2.
