Is there anybody out there?
That was the question posed by Julie Stone and Tee Holden, from the School of Flexible and Partnership Learning (SFPL), at their workshop for the Association of University Administrators annual conference; held at the University of Warwick from March 29 to 31.
Their session entitled 'Out of Sight But Not Out of Mind' dealt with the challenges, successes and good practices experienced through the Online Distance Learning Project at Derby.
Derby's AUA workshop chimed with the message from keynote speakers at the annual conference, that online and distance learning would be a growing feature in the future of higher education.
Bev Matthews, Programme Advisory Service Co-ordinator, and Richard Tarplee, Student Liaison Officer for the Joint Honours System and SFPL, also gave a presentation on 'Attendance Monitoring' to the conference.
They discussed how the pattern of student attendance can be a critical indicator of possible withdrawal from the university course as a whole. The use of electronic bar code reader systems by the University of Derby to record attendance information was also mentioned.
Richard, a recent SFPL recruit, said: "I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Derby appears to be ahead of many other institutions with a lot of its developments."
