Students on the only UK University undergraduate UK course aimed at professionals in the specialist pharmaceutical area of aseptic preparation and dispensing graduated recently.

The University of Derby hosted an Awards Ceremony for BTEC and diploma students who have successfully studied on a range of professional and vocational courses in the fields of health and science.
Ten students from across the country graduated from the BTEC Professional Diploma in Aseptic Services - with Derby being the only higher education institution to offer this course.
The awards followed on from the main degree and postgraduate Awards Ceremonies held at the Assembly Rooms in January.
Programmes
More than 100 students graduated at the most recent event at the University's Kedleston Road site including those who studied on the following programmes:
- Postgraduate Practice Certificate in Independent and Supplementary Prescribing
- Practice Certificate in Independent and Supplementary Prescribing
- Certificate of Achievement: Overseas Nursing Programme
- Letter of Credit: Overseas Nursing Programme
- BTEC Professional Diploma in Aseptic Services
- BTEC Professional Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy Technicians
- University Diploma in Quarry Technology
- University Certificate in Quarry Studies
- University Diploma in Asphalt Technology
- University Certificate in Asphalt Studies
- Certificate of Achievement: Foundation Studies in Quarry and Asphalt Technology
- University Certificate in Construction Materials
- University Certificate in Ready Mixed Concrete Technology.
One of the successful students, also in line to win a prize for outstanding academic achievement is Kristina Chapman, who will be awarded a BTEC Professional Diploma in Aseptic Services.
Kristina is the Principal Pharmacy Technician (Aseptic Services) for Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, in Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire, who has produced a training package to help nurses enhance their skills associated with the preparation of injectable medicines on the wards and in clinical areas. It has been used to help train more than 200 nurses at the hospital within its first year of use.
Her final project was: The training and practical assessment of nursing staff in the aseptic preparation of intravenous additives made outside of pharmacy aseptics.
She explained: "Where possible preparation of injectable medicines is carried out in the pharmacy aseptic dispensing unit by members of the pharmacy team. However, where injectable drugs require immediate administration preparation by medical or nursing staff is more likely to take place on the ward.
Improving Safety
"One of my roles at the hospital is to deliver aseptic training and competence assessment for nurses in the preparation of these injectable medicines. The training package I have produced has been introduced by the hospital and is enhancing nursing skills and improving patient safety. The training package is also shortly to be rolled out to include junior medical staff."
Her tutor at Derby, Helen Martin, Programme Leader for the course, said: "Kristina was an excellent student and the work she produced is a good example of how her course has helped her apply a real-life benefit to her profession. We are looking forward to the Awards Ceremony as it helps us to showcase and celebrate the achievements of students on these professional and vocational courses."
The event will also celebrate the achievements of the latest cohorts of students who have been studying on the Diplomas in Asphalt Technology and Quarry Technology which have the support of the industries' respective national institutes (The Institute of Quarrying and The Institute of Asphalt Technology).
The pioneering education partnership, which offers the first formal academic qualifications for the £6bn industry drew national praise from the CBI and Universities UK in its Stepping Higher report as setting a blueprint for other industry qualifications to follow.
These University courses have the backing of major international operators in the industry such as Tarmac (Anglo-American), Lafarge, Hanson (Heidelberg Cement Group), Cemex and Aggregate Industries (Holcim) who each sponsor some of their staff to take their place amongst around 250 students on both diploma courses every year.
The ceremony was supported by some key partner organisations including Helapet (pharmacy), and the Institute of Quarrying and the Institute of Asphalt Technology.
EHS Dean Professor Helen Langton presented the awards and guests were welcomed by the University's new Pro Vice-Chancellor Liz Barnes.
