Crystal Clear or Confused?

The subject of tuition fees is a hot topic. MPs are debating them, universities are trying their best to explain (or justify) them and students are deciding whether they're worth taking on.

Central to the University is a commitment to teaching excellence and providing a high quality education that's also good value - where the focus is on our students and helping them to succeed.  Because of our relatively small size, smaller classes and provision of a personal tutor for every one of our undergraduates, we're calling our offer 'education with the personal touch'.

Getting The Facts Straight

You may be well versed in the subject of tuition fees but these FACTS are a handy reminder.

  • FACT: Students don't have to have thousands of pounds in their bank to be able to go to university. Fees are automatically paid by the Student Loan Company
  • FACT: They don't have to pay anything back until they are earning over £21,000 per year
  • FACT: If they never earn more than £21,000 then they will never have to pay anything back
  • FACT: Employers take repayments directly off the payroll (as they do tax and National Insurance)
  • FACT: Repayments are based on future earnings and not borrowings
  • FACT: If earnings increase so will monthly repayments, but if they decrease monthly repayments will do too. If graduates are ever out of work then repayments will stop
  • FACT: The more they borrow the longer it will take to pay back BUT after 30 years any remaining debt is cancelled automatically

So What Does Derby Charge?

We are one of the few universities charging tuition fees that reflect the true cost of the courses we have on offer.

Our three bands are:

  • Classroom based courses (for subjects such as humanities and business where no additional equipment is needed) - £6,995
  • Resource intensive courses (such as forensics) - £7,495
  • Specialist courses (e.g. Outdoor Leadership and Coaching (in Buxton) where we are surrounded by over 50 of the UK's best climbing sites) - £7,995

On average, annual tuition fees for our degree courses will be under £7,500.
