The Mathematics Group Project module takes place in your second year and is an integral part of all of the Mathematics degrees at Derby.

It will introduce you to the role of a professional mathematician.

You'll work in a team on a project specified by an industrial sponsor local to us in Derby. This includes Bombardier Transportation (UK) Ltd, Rolls Royce, ABB, BR Research and ADTranz.

The problem is real, open-ended and will frequently involve the analysis of complex issues and data. It'll test your communication skills and through solving the problem you'll learn how to team build, as well as manage, organise and reflect on your own progress and learning.

Assessment of the project will encourage you to reflect on your professional development, and also provide evidence for your Personal Development Plan portfolio.

Throughout the project, you'll be expected to show a professional attitude, demonstrating commitment to both the project and your group.

The benefits you'll get from the Group Project are:

  • Liaison with industrial and business colleagues
  • Vocationally relevant learning experience
  • Development of your professional skills
  • Practical experience integrating and developing further mathematical, IT and other subject related skills.

"I believe this Group Project is an excellent piece of good practice and a valuable part of [the students] education."
