Bryan Walker
Bryan studied BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Computer Science, and has used his numerical skills to help drivers across the country get to their destination on time.
The placement
Bryan's work placement was as an analyst for global service company Serco at its Traffic Control Centre, near the M5 at Quinten Express Way, close to Birmingham.
The company was so impressed with his work that it offered him a prestigious role compiling financial and strategic data at its head office.
"I really enjoyed it and the work had an impact by improving the accuracy of the information available. The placement required a detailed knowledge of formulae and I was able to draw on what I had learned during my maths degree."
Achieving aims
Bryan was awarded a first class honours in Mathematics. His tutor, Val Lowndes, Senior Lecturer in Mathematics, said: "This is a classic example of a success story involving a mature student who originally was a motor vehicle mechanic. Bryan wanted to realise his ambition of obtaining a degree and embark on a new career and he has achieved both aims."
His new job, based at Serco's Hampshire office, involves work with all of the Group's divisions across four continents.
