I couldn't believe the amount of experience and skills I gained throughout the placement. I am very glad that I have done it and I am sure it will be very beneficial in the future.

Bartek is studying on the BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Computer Science degree.

Why BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Computer Science at Derby?

Mathematics has always been my favourite field and I thought that studying a mathematically based course would be a great opportunity to do something useful with my interest.

What I loved about the course

I really enjoyed the group project the most, during which I was responsible for creating a simulation of a train depot for Bombardier Company. It was a great chance to gain very useful skills, which were very beneficial for me whilst seeking a work placement.

Since the beginning of the course I've been trying to choose modules that I was interested in and that seemed to be useful in industry. When I started my work placement last year I realised that it was a very good idea as I made use of a lot of skills, which I gained at Uni.

Student life in Derby

Derby isn't a big city and it's perfect for students as accommodation isn't very expensive and there are few nice pubs. As far as Uni is concerned, I've enjoyed studying there. I like the idea that the vast majority of students are studying at the same place, which really helps to meet a lot of friends.

My placement

I did my placement at NATS (National Air Traffic Services). I worked in Operational Analysis Department as a member of Consultancy and Data Services Team within Capacity and Environment Section. I provided my team with both analytical and IT support for a variety of projects regarding Air Traffic Control and airports simulations.

I couldn't believe the amount of experience and skills I gained throughout the placement. I am very glad that I have done it and I am sure it will be very beneficial in the future. I enjoyed the placement in both work and social aspects. It was fantastic working with professional, friendly and helpful people, which made the placement so great.

In my opinion work placement should be compulsory for everyone. Companies don't require relevant experience whilst recruiting for a placement. However, they expect it in the process of recruiting graduates. Therefore I definitely recommend doing one as it significantly increases student's employability.

So for any students thinking of taking a placement year, don't hesitate and go ahead. Start applying as soon as possible and you won't regret it.
