Something for everyone
I felt a maths degree would really help me as I want to become a maths teacher, and a degree would further develop my skills and knowledge. A mathematics degree doesn't just cover pure maths, but also looks at how it applies to the real world, which helps as I can see how maths relates to the workplace.
There are a variety of modules that you can study, from operational research (Introduction to Management Science and Management Science), to pure and theoretical mathematics (Linear Algebra and Mathematical Methods). There is something for everyone.
Student support
The lecturers are really supportive and if you are struggling with something they are always there to help. There are weekly drop-in maths clinics, which are really useful as students from different years are there to help out, so you can get help but also get additional information on what else will happen throughout your degree.
The facilities at Derby are great for maths students. We are a part of the School of Computing and Mathematics, so there are specialist computing labs available with computing software that will help throughout your degree.
Student life
Making friends is really easy at Derby. Not only do you make friends with students on your course, but also the people you live with and anyone from sports teams or any of the societies you join.
Would I recommend Derby?
I'd recommend a degree at Derby because you have a lot of support from lecturers and friends, but also the University of Derby is a really friendly place to study and they are always encouraging students to try new things and to get involved in university life.
