Studying a joint honours degree
Studying Mathematics and Business Management as a joint honours degree has been exciting and challenging from the start. The lecturers were welcoming and have been supportive, always willing to offer help and advice. I've had the freedom to choose modules within both subject areas, picking modules that meet my personal interests.
I recommend a placement year
I chose to study at Derby as the course gave me the opportunity to pursue an industrial placement in my third year. I worked within finance at BAE Systems. During this time I gained business skills and experience that has proved vital in obtaining a graduate position. I would recommend a placement year to anyone, as you need more than a degree when trying to find a graduate role within the current competitive environment.
Thales graduate scheme
I have been fortunate enough to gain a place on the business management graduate scheme at Thales, a multi-national organisation in Aerospace, Defence, Security and Transportation. The Thales graduate scheme will allow me to rotate around various business areas such as marketing, programme/project management, commercial, and procurement. This will broaden my understanding of business and help me determine my future career path.
Endless opportunities
Studying Mathematics has provided endless opportunities in terms of career prospects and further academic possibilities. I've found that studying the two subjects together has provided me with an advntage over other candidates when applying for jobs.
The extra-curricular opportunities that are on offer at Derby have undoubtedly played a role in my personal development. I have participated in both the University of Derby Award (ILM endorsed award for employability, leadership and management) and the Employer Mentoring Scheme, allowing me to gain further business exposure and skills.
