Opportunities to earn some cash, and enhance my confidence
The University has it's own Student Employment Agency. I currently have a part time job working with the organisation Aimhigher, as well as working for the University as a student ambassador. I also work at the Faculty of Business, Computing and Law Maths Clinics as a Maths Study Advisor, and have recently taken up working as a Maths Support Assistant helping students on the Access programme.
All these opportunities have been made available to me by the University, and have developed my confidence, communication and teaching skills, as well as paid me a wage.
Ben Cadd is studying BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Computer Science.
Thinking about Maths and Computing? Do it at Derby!
A degree at Derby University is a fantastic experience. There are so many opportunities available and there is a really friendly and supportive atmosphere here.
From forensics to production planning
My course is great. I'm currently in the second year and enjoying it immensely. The area of computing I've been studying is computer forensics. It's a very exciting and new field. This year in maths, we've covered some decision mathematics in the module Management Science, as well as statistical analysis in the module Stats Techniques. The highlight of the second year has to be the Maths Group Project - an interesting module involving links with a local Derby business. Our project centred around a production planning problem, working with data from Bosch Thermotechnic, part of the Worcester Bosch group.
Support when I need it
The lecturers are great. The maths department especially is a well organised unit that provides much support for the students. Their open door policy makes it very easy to pop in for a chat about any problems.
In fact, the best thing about Derby uni is the support given to students. If you encounter any problems either academic, financial or personal, there are people who you can talk to.
Making friends is no problem
When I arrived in Derby I didn't know anyone. Now I have so many groups of friends it's hard to keep track! Everyone at the uni is very friendly and making new friends was very easy. Also with the multitude of clubs and societies, you're bound to find people with similar interests.
And about the learning facilities....
They're very impressive. For my course in particular, the computer labs in B-block are an important tool, and the University's links with Microsoft and other software companies mean that we're always up to date with the latest equipment and kit.
What about Derby as a place to live?
Derby city is a really good size. It's not so huge that you can't find your way around, but large enough that there is stuff to do. The brand new Westfield shopping centre has three floors of shops, a food court and a 3D cinema.
Would I recommend Derby?
Absolutely! Derby is an awesome university both due to the friendliness of its staff and students, and the opportunities they provide.
