Use of OPNET
Postgraduate Research:
- Investigating Voice over Wireless LANs. Better voice quality is achieved by use of improved channel access protocols over Wireless LANs. Quality of Service plays an important role to this, defining the proper requirements in order to achieve better real-time voice transmission. The objective of this research is to develop an improved method based initially on the use of OPNET simulations.
- Improving the QoS in Ad hoc networks for use in crisis management. The use of Ad Hoc networks in disaster management is increasing, however problems are also increasing in the QoS and the management of connections provided. The main objective of this work is to identify the factors affecting QoS and to develop an improved protocol that addresses these. The first phase will be completed with the use of OPNET based simulations.
Postgraduate Teaching:
- 7CS060 is a course in advanced Network Design which aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of Network Design and the technical issues associated with it. It will look at the practical issues that directly affect the design and the process of tendering and supplier selection. It looks at: Network Design Concepts, Network Design Models, Backbone Services, Distributed Services, Local Access Services, Design of VLANs, Design of Storage Systems, Implementation of VPN, and Implementation of Voice over IP. OPNET is the simulation environment providing a performance evaluation for network components related with the projects.
- 7CS059 is a course in Mobile and Wireless Networking which aims to equip students with the required knowledge and understanding about the processes involved in the design and implementation of Wireless Networks. It looks in-depth at the theory behind Wireless Networks and shows how this affects their design. It also looks at the site survey and discusses how building design factors affect the design. OPNET is the simulation environment providing a performance evaluation for Wireless networks.
Undergraduate Teaching:
- 6CC013 is a course in Network Design & Management which provides an understanding of the issues involved in the design, implementation and management of a large scale computer network. It enables students to evaluate the benefits of sophisticated network management. OPNET is the simulation environment providing a performance evaluation for network components and is used as a tool for both demonstration and exercises.
