Distributed and Intelligent Systems Research Group (DISYS)

Head of the DISYS research group is Professor Nik Bessis

DISYS is a research group within the School of Computing and Mathematics. The group was formed back in 2010 and aims to demonstrate international recognition due to the commitment, determination and expertise brought in from its high-esteemed members.

Our principal goal is to create and develop an internationally excellent research environment that is well regarded for its industry collaborations and scholarly research activities in the fields of:

  • Emerging architectures
  • Services and technologies, with a particular focus on peer-to-peer networks, grid and cloud computing.

The emphasis here is on the design and development of model architectures, heuristics, algorithms, protocols and applicable systems to facilitate the efficient and accurate discovery and use of versatile resources in large-scale heterogeneous networks.

We have a growing, yet notable, interest in collective computational intelligence, with a particular focus on context aware systems, agents, trust and reputation, social dynamics, crowd sourcing, swarm intelligence, web analytics and their fit-for-purpose applicability in various settings such as in disaster management.

The three-year development strategy includes making a successful REF submission in 2013.

MPhil and PhD

DISYS provides a centre of excellence for research training for postgraduate students with opportunities for registration for higher degrees including MPhil and PhD.
