I think I've made the most of the ample opportunities I've had and I'm really pleased to win the Microsoft Award for Best Overall Performance in Stage 3 Computing. It's always nice to have hard work recognised.

Alan studied BSc (Hons) Networks and Security and won the Microsoft Award for Best Overall Performance in Stage 3 Computing.

A course to suit you

In my first year I studied core modules as well as various other specialisations such as Internet Computing. The way the course is structured allows you to pursue your interests so it allows changes in your course if you find yourself enjoying different aspects or modules. The second year was more specialised with common modules and course-specific modules. I also studied CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Administrator) which gave me a great networking qualification to take with me on placement.

I was lucky enough to get a placement with Microsoft

A large focus of the second year is securing a work placement, and a double module is dedicated to this and other job hunting related topics.

I've had an amazing year in London working for Microsoft and I've learned phenomenal amounts. I was part of the team of Operations staff for the MSN platform, doing a variety of pro-active engineering and tier 3 troubleshooting. I've gained lots of relevant experience that I can take to a full time graduate role.

I've come back from Microsoft on a retainer scheme to keep in touch (and get paid!) while back at University, as a means to hopefully return to the company once I've finished studying.

It's been very challenging

The dissertation is obviously a large part of the year and there's an added level of knowledge and depth expected from us. I'm involving Microsoft in my project in the form of a case study and also as a great source of information, which is another perk of meeting scores of knowledgeable people on placement.

It's not all about work

Another large part of my life at Derby has been my involvement in the University Rowing Club. I started in my first year after having rowed at school (not a requirement may I point out!) and had a fantastic time meeting loads of new people and generally getting me involved with another side of student life.

In my second year I was president of the club and we were very successful both on the water and off, winning club of the year. This was a great achievement to put on my CV and was certainly something to talk about during my placement interview. This year I'm rowing in the men's first team, and I'm very pleased to be back and participating!

I've accomplished a lot

All in all I've had a great time at Derby, having achieved some things that will really get me ahead in my future career. I've also met loads of people and made lots of friends, and I'll be sad to say goodbye to my student days come June.

I think I've made the most of the ample opportunities I've had and I'm really pleased to win the Microsoft Award for Best Overall Performance in Stage 3 Computing. It's always nice to have hard work recognised.
