There are things I know now that really help me to approach situations in a more effective way.
”One Derby graduate from Africa is already using knowledge and skills gained from his MSc to support the global fight to find a vaccine for HIV/AIDS.
Andrew studied MSc Information Technology (Online).
Why I chose this course
I looked at my own background - my BSc in quantitative economics (econometrics and Statistics) and the professional technical qualifications I have in different aspects of IT - and identified what was missing. I needed more developed management skills, an awareness of strategic issues, and the ability to design better systems and processes. I discovered the newly validated MSc at Derby and it matched my requirements perfectly.
Uganda's Virus Research Institute became partners with the IAVI in 2000 and the organisation continues to grow. Initially, we worked in a small office and the technical team in New York gave instructions, but as the operation got more complex, I realised I had to find my own operational blueprint in an African context.
It's really helped my career
There are things I know now that really help me to approach situations in a more effective way, I have a strong desire to show people in the West that we can achieve levels of excellence in IT in Africa - often more cheaply and efficiently.
We're now getting groups from other countries in Africa visiting us to see how our systems operate, so I'm confident that my skills are benefiting AIDS research already.
