David Graham

I would recommend this course as Derby is such a welcoming university with many opportunities. It's an enjoyable place to study.

David Graham is 23 and studying BSc (Hons) Computer Forensic Investigation. He won the Cy4or Award for Outstanding Achievement in Computer Forensics and Security in 2010.

I've always had an interest in computers. After a few years working I decided to return to education and study computing. The area of security interested me the most and that led me to Derby, which I feel has one of the best courses for Forensics and Security.

What I've learned so far

The work has been interesting and I've learned many new things. In the first year we learned about forensic science and how to collect digital and biological evidence from a crime scene. We were given a thorough foundation in computer networks and also covered some programming - we went into depth in how the computer works and how all the components work with each other.

The social life

I managed to combine studying with making new friends and settling into the area very well. I've made a lot of good friends here and wouldn't trade the experience at all. Derby is a fun place to go out with friends and I've had many fun times here.

The facilities

The facilities at the university are impressive for my course. We have a lab dedicated to forensic students with industry standard software. We can use it any time we wish. Derby is determined to make this course one of the best in the country and part of this is providing us with the best facilities. They do this and it makes for a great learning experience.

The library is a great resource with numerous books and journals available to help with studies, and away from studying the university has a welcoming bar to relax and socialise after a hard day of studying.

The placement

I will be taking a placement at the end of my second year. I'm currently getting my CV up to date and applying for various placement opportunities. Derby provide many good resources for putting yourself in the best position possible when applying for placements.

The benefits of a placement to my studies in particular are vast. Industry experience is vital and the placement year will give me a solid year of experience working that will look good on my CV.

The rewards and challenges

The rewarding parts of the course are expanding my knowledge in an area that interests me and in an area I really want to work in when I graduate. Handing in that assignment you've spent a lot of time and effort on and receiving a good grade is very rewarding.

Time management can be a challenge, especially when assignment deadlines are looming for various modules.

Combining studying and work

I balance my studies with working part time as a Residential Assistant (RA) at the Halls of Residence. The job is to make sure the site and students are safe and secure and to deal with any problems that might arise. I live on site and work shifts with three other RA's. We work after the office staff have gone home and up until night security start.

Winning the award

I feel very proud to have won the Cy4or Award for Outstanding Achievement in Computer Forensics and Security. I didn't expect it and it's great to have been recognised for the hard work I put into the year. Of course, the support I had from the university, tutors and even friends helped me a long way in being able to win the award, so I am thankful for that support too.
