WildScience
WildScience is an exciting new free educational experience for schools and learning groups in Derby and Derbyshire. The project is supported by the University of Derby and delivered by the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, Enviro-Learn and University students.
We live at a time when less of our young people get the chance to absorb nature into their very beings, in their growth, in their imagination and through their education. Schools and communities passionate about wildlife and the environment recognise this critical change but need support to take action.
Through the WildScience project, teachers and group leaders can now engage along with their pupils in a variety of free activities including pond dipping; nature's recycling, wild bush, mini beast hunt or a school BioBlitz. The activities can be held in the school or groups own grounds or a local green space or park. Trained students from the University will deliver the wildlife educational activities which are mapped to the National Curriculum through maths and science, and encourage children to understand and enjoy outdoor spaces, wildlife and get involved in biodiversity.
Beverley Rhodes of WildVolunteering said: "Last year we piloted the project and pupils had a great time exploring mini beasts and finding out about trees, alien invaders and about biodiversity in their school grounds".
