One Day Wildlife Courses in June July & August
Local ecologist and tutor, Debbie Alston, is running a number of one day identification courses this summer. Each course consists of an initial theory part before using your new skills in the surroundings of the Eco Centre on the neutral and limestone grasslands.
All courses are held at the Eco Centre near Wirksworth, and cost £20.00
Habitat and Vegetation Surveying Techniques Sunday 16 June 10am-4pm
Carrying out a habitat survey is one of the simplest and most basic forms of ecological surveys. This course will look at the principles of vegetation and habitat surveying and in detail at Phase I surveys. It will also provide you with an overview of the National Vegetation Classification system (NVC), a more complex way of classifying habitats throughout the UK. Part of this course will be indoors, the rest outdoors practicing the techniques. This course will be of interest to students, consultants, naturalists and community groups who wish to carry out a habitat survey on a Local Nature Reserve or similar.
An Introduction to Grasses Sunday 14 July 10am-4pm
Grasses are a fundamental group of plants and are key indicators of geology, type of grassland and management. This one day basic course will enable you to identify a range of grasses using simple keys and basic plant terminology.
Wildflower Identification for 'Improvers' Thursday 1 August 10am-4pm
This one day course is for those who already have a basic understanding of wildflower identification. The course will look at those species which flower later in the summer, including the 'difficult' daisy family!
