Working in our community
4 May 2012
The University is committed to being community engaged, especially around our Derby campus. We have joined forces with several local groups to promote their community events and activities so everyone can become involved.
Rather than the University producing an annual events leaflet, we are placing a regular update in the New Zealand Times newsletter based at the Lonny Wilsoncroft Centre, events information can also be found on the University website. In this way we can support the centre and reach about 3000 households every month.
One of the activities we are currently supporting is a series of computer 'taster sessions' at the Lonny Wilsoncroft Centre on Stepping Lane. The weekly sessions started in April and take place on Friday mornings from 10am-1pm. Daniel Wong, Glenn Price, Miguel Leite and Patrick O'Sullivan, students from the university have volunteered to help people learn basic computer and internet skills using five computers provided by Derby Homes. Pete Matthews from Derby Homes said: "The sessions will help local residents learn the many benefits of computers and the internet; reduce isolation, provide a much needed service and make use of a fantastic community centre". If you would like to book a computer, contact Mandy Coons at the centre on 01332 290458.
WildDerby, West End Bowls Club, Six Streets, the 35th Scout Group, the West End Community Centre and Ashbourne Road Church are just some of the other groups we have teamed up with.
Events being promoted on the University's website this year include; a Bat Walk, community arts trail and a Christmas Fayre later in the year.
We're always looking for opportunities to work with our local community groups and residents, so if you have an idea for a project, get in touch. Contact Peter Walker, Community Relations Officer on 01332 591945, or email p.walker@derby.ac.uk
