University Continues To Support Student Volunteering With WildDerby Partnership
26 October 2012
Once again the University of Derby has joined forces with WildDerby, Derby City Council's wildlife and conservation programme, to support students in a range of 'WildVolunteering' community projects.
Throughout 2012 diverse projects ranging from digital storytelling and biodiversity in business to lizard and butterfly surveys took place involving 30 students.
The project, led by Beverley Rhodes of WildDerby, and the University's Student Services and Community Relations teams, delivered valuable wildlife activities, including education on urban wildlife, to the people of Derby.
WildDerby provides a fantastic opportunity for students to be involved in communities, develop life skills and gain valuable hands on work experience, providing them with knowledge and skills that can then be applied to the workplace. As this year's project comes to a close students have produced reports and have access to work references to present to prospective employers.
Beverley Rhodes of WildDerby said: "This year's project has been a huge success and we are really looking forward to WildVolunteering continuing in 2013. The project needs new ideas and we welcome the contributions both staff and students can make across our valuable field of work".
For the new project, WildDerby will again provide a team of partners including Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and other skilled volunteers to train students starting in January 2013.
Planning for the next WildVolunteering projects are well underway and Faculties and Departments at the University are encouraged to come forward with ideas to increase the diversity of the project.
Students keen to get involved can find out more by visiting the WildVolunteering link when the project goes live in early November.
