The West Indian Community Association held an awards evening on Monday 20 August at the West Indian Community Centre.

The evening acknowledged the importance of their young people who took part in the annual Caribbean Carnival, held this year on Saturday 21 July.

It was a bright sunny day on which it seemed the whole of Derby turned out to dance along with the carnival procession. Dancers made their way from Pear Tree School to the Market Place in the city centre to compete for the top prize.

The Derby troop took the top prize for their wonderful designs, dance and confidence in this remarkable and iconic event. The winners this year were: Samantha Hudson, EMCCAN Regional Carnival Queen, Alice Burton and Charlene Stephenson. Troupe recipients receiving certificates were: Helen Chikuwanyanga, Iyesha McCaulsky, Javen Stephenson, Kajira Atwal-Noon, Kenyah Edwards, Lewis Henry, Louis Blackshaw, Niaz Stephenson, Riaz Stephenson and Rickay Hewitt-Martin.

Presenting the medals and the certificates was Diane M Morgan, Strategic Manager, for East Midlands Carnival Arts Network, together with Mr George Mighty, Chair of EMCCAN and Derby West Indian Community Association.
