Community Bowls Match Challenge 2011

It was a perfect summers evening for the third annual University of Derby Community Bowls Club Challenge held on Wednesday 17 August 2011. More than 40 people including bowls club members and staff from the University of Derby made up teams filling the green for this year's event.
After an evening of bowls in the August sunshine games came to a close and winners and runners-up made their way to the clubhouse for curry and post game discussions.
As in previous years delicious Asian food was provided by the Hana Piru restaurant based in Derby's Westfield Centre. Both vegetable and chicken curries were enjoyed before the winners and runners-up were announced.
This year all the teams were mixed with bowls club members joining forces with University staff. George Riley, Club President presented the winners cup to Sylvianna, Dot,and Roy from the bowls club who teamed up with Leigh from the University. Next to be presented were Ana, Laurence and Pete from the University with Vernon from the bowls club to raise the traditional wooden spoon as the runner-up team.
Peter Walker, Community Relations Officer at the University said how much laughter and fun there had been and how well the club members encourage new players to the game, making everyone welcome.
George Riley, Club President thanked Peter Walker and the University for continuing to support the club.A raffle with prizes provided by the University of Derby raised £70 in support of Diabetes UK.
Peter Walker is hoping to raise a further £3,000 for Diabetes UK when he and his son take part in a 500km cycle ride starting in London on 31 August and finishing in Paris on 4 September. If you would like to sponsor Peter go to: www.justgiving/mikesbikeride2011
