Sinfin Community Development Learning programme

Helping people in Sinfin get back into education

Delegates at the Community Workshop in Sinfin.

The Centre for Community Development and Regeneration, headed by Gersh Subhra, created the Sinfin Community Development Learning programme with the Sinfin Together Partnership, a residents' association for the 9,000 residents in the area.

What sort of people worked on the project?

The programme was aimed at residents who:

  • were active in the community, or who wanted to become active
  • wanted to explore community development as a career
  • had a view on how to change an aspect of the community for the better in the area.

It was designed to attract people who didn't see themselves as traditional university students, but who wanted to learn without the pressure of accredited qualifications, entry qualifications or tests.

Residents had the chance to get involved in a community learning programme through a series of six workshops, with the aim of encouraging them to become active in local issues and projects.

Workshops in the community

These workshops looked at how active community residents can tackle issues, develop projects, access funding and find out about other learning opportunities in the city. They were held in community settings like the library and the SCILLS community centre in Sinfin and involved a range of agencies, including the Derby City Primary Care Trust, Derby Community Safety Partnership, and the CAST Trust.

Example projects

One of the groups that was set up as a result of the programme was the Just 4 Girls group, you can read more about them here.
