The world is changing. Are you?
We already know that to survive, to grow, organisations must adapt - and continuously adapt - to a changing world. Whether it is responding to the changing demands of customers, citizens, and global markets; to a world of social networking and expansive touch-points, or to a need to heighten an employee's sense of purpose and achievement, we all need to create a sustainable future.
We are becoming aware that this will require more than simply re-working existing processes and structures; more than applying existing knowledge to obvious problems, more than working harder doing the same things as always. The capacity to adapt demands a new view and new skills; and people who can work with ambiguity and uncertainty, as well as doing the simple things well.
These are challenging times for leaders and organisations. Leaders have to apply their expertise but not rely on it. They need to focus and simplify as well as innovate and grow. Leaders are required to deliver their functional responsibilities as well as take responsibility for the whole organisation.
The survival and growth of an organisation is dependent on making the most of collective intelligence and shifting responsibilities for problem solving to a broad range of people.
This is the challenge we have set ourselves at the newly created Centre for Leadership Development (CLD) at Derby Business School: how to develop leaders, as well as build the collective leadership capacity of organisations to create value. Building on Derby Business School's growing reputation for employer engagement, outstanding teaching, applied research and commercial activities, CLD will be a community of researchers, experts, leaders, and employers, working together to solve problems that matter.
