Why choose this course?

  • It's been developed in partnership with the International Clay Technology Association.

  • You'll develop the work based skills and knowledge you need to become a successful clay technologist or manager in the heavy clay industry.

  • It's work based, so you'll study while working and apply everything you learn in the workplace immediately.

  • We've designed it to fit round your life so you can complete the whole course at once, or break it down in to shorter parts.

About the course

Foundation degrees are one of the fastest growing higher education qualifications in the UK. This four-year part time qualification is equivalent to the first two years of a full honours degree and is a recognised qualification in its own right

If you're working in the heavy clay industry, moving through the company management pathway and assuming more technical and managerial responsibility, the Foundation degree will help you to develop your understanding of the technicalities of the industry

The work based, vocational nature of the programme will help your career progression, developing your competence and the confidence to perform in increasingly complex and demanding situations, and providing you with the skills and knowledge you need to become a successful clay technologist or manager in the heavy clay industry.

The course is delivered by blended learning, comprising a mixture of online learning supported by written material and occasional 'project-weeks'. This mix enables you to balance your work role, your personal commitments and studying.

We recognise that committing to a four year programme of study is significant, so we've developed the Foundation degree to comprise a series of step-off/step-on awards which enables you to take a break and return to learning as your circumstances allow.

The course has been designed in collaboration with experts from the heavy clay industry. It includes technical modules such as Geology and Mineralogy, Processing and Forming and Drying and Firing of clay products.

You will also be taught generic skills to help you in your role, and you will apply what you learn through work based projects which develop your research, critical analysis and problem solving skills.

How you'll learn

You'll study online and during 'project-weeks'. You'll have access to your University tutor by email and telephone and you'll have a work based mentor so you have support, opportunities to ask questions and discuss challenges throughout your studies.

You'll have access to a virtual learning environment so you can meet other students and post questions (and answers) through blogs and wikis. This also gives you access to digital and written material, documents, podcasts, videos and links to interesting and related web based resources.

As well as the very latest learning technology to assist you, you'll also use more traditional materials such as textbooks and academic papers.
