About the course

You'll develop a thorough understanding of the process of civil engineering technical design and management. You'll be introduced to key design skills in structures, fluids, geology, soil mechanics, surveying and materials. This course will also enhance your skills in advanced areas of civil engineering theory, particularly structures and infrastructure design.

This degree is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).  You can visit www.jbm.org.uk  for further information. This will lead to Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (MCIHT) and the Institute of Highway Engineers (MIHE) following a period of relevant experience and a professional review. It's also accredited by The Engineering Council.

Work placement opportunities

You can gain valuable industry experience on an optional work placement between stages two and three.  You'll also gain an additional qualification, the Diploma in Professional Practice.

Your career

When you graduate, you'll have lots of career opportunities in civil engineering in fields such as design, maintenance, asset management and construction. You could work in private companies which specialise in contracting or consulting, for local authorities, water companies, Network Rail or the Highways Agency, for example. Or you may choose to continue your studies by taking a postgraduate course in order to gain Chartered Engineer status.

A Chartered Engineer is a person with an accredited Bachelor Degree and MSc (or MEng) and experience who can develop appropriate solutions to engineering problems, use new or existing technologies through innovation, creativity and change; introduce new and more efficient production techniques, marketing and construction concepts, or pioneer new engineering services and management methods.  The qualification is essential to be a lead principal associate practicing engineer and director, in a professional organisation.

Lectures, seminars, tutorials, on and off site laboratory and site work and visits to companies.

How you're assessed

Workshop laboratories, surveying field work, groupwork and individual assignments. Some traditional exams maybe involved for design tests.

This is a resource intensive course.

UK/EU students

  • Full time: £7,495 (each year)
  • Part time: £935 per module (you usually take 18 of these modules in total).
