The benefits you'll get shouldn't be underestimated

Freshers Fair

Help to build your career

It's a fact that graduates earn higher salaries - the average graduate salary is around £20,000 and graduates earn 35% more than the average wage.

See where some Derby graduates are working now...

And while you're at university you'll develop a huge range of skills that will help you get a graduate job, including:

  • verbal and written communication skills, including giving presentations, report writing, and contributing to discussions
  • organisational skills, like managing and prioritising a workload and managing your time
  • problem solving
  • technical skills related to the degree you take.

These skills will make you more desireable in the eyes of your future employers and having these skills will also increase your chances of promotion once you gain a graduate job.

Here at Derby University, we really believe in work placements and doing work for real companies - they are a great way to develop your experience of the working environment and boost your business skills, and so we offer these on many courses.

Perhaps the most important thing you will develop is confidence

And confidence - whether in the workplace or in social situations - is something you're going to need in bucket loads, as you go through life!

You'll also learn to use your own initiative at university, and become more independent.

Initially, that might just mean learning to cook or wash your own clothes, but in years time, this self-reliance and ability to organise and motivate yourself, could be what sets you apart from other candidates for a job.

For the experience!

A huge part of going to university is the social life - making new friends and  meeting people who come from different backgrounds and cultures to you.

  • cooking
  • washing your clothes
  • cleaning and housework!
