Graham Macaulay
Student Volunteer of the Year 2011
Nominated by Stephanie Argyle
Derby North Scouts d-c@derbynorthscouts.org.uk
Graham is a dedicated member of any team. He currently mentors our 14/ 18 year old Young Leaders, helping them to deliver scouting in turn to younger members. He is also a member of the Derbyshire Contingent going to this summer International Jamboree in Sweden. He never fails to deliver quality volunteering and accrues many hours of service to others, is always helpful and cheerful...in fact, a good Scout!
Explorer Scout Leader (Young Leader) 3 years. Jamboree Contingent Assistant Leader 2 years. Executive member and other numerous minor roles as and when required. Prior to this, Graham volunteered within his home town of Croydon.
Graham shows great leadership qualities when arranging training for and mentoring of the young Leader Unit. He does not have to be asked to run module workshops, he gets on with the tasks using his own initiative. As a result of leading by example we have recruited and retained more young leaders than in any other year. Grahams dedication to Scouting is without question; always at the forefront of volunteering for any job, from photocopying documents for other leaders to running an international unit for the next jamboree...in fact we do have to say no for him sometimes! During his time with us in Derby, he achieved much; his Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award and Queens Scout Award being the biggest and best. On a personal level he has grown in confidence and maturity and is an asset to our team. We know that he will have to leave us at the end of his course, but are happy in the knowledge that all he has gained will be passed on to more young people in the area he eventually decides to live and work. All the above of course, undertaken whilst studying for his degree...we hope not to its detriment!
We have had an enthusiastic young (er) person who has acted as an inspiration to the Scouts and younger leaders and he has brought a raft of fresh ideas to enthuse the older ones!
