Dawn Mallon
Student Volunteer of the Year 2011 - Runner up
Nominated by Eileen Burwood
Barnardo's Sherwood Project eileen.burwood@barnardos.org.uk
Dawn originally came to us to do a student placement, but has stayed on as a volunteer, despite being a busy mother and studying for her degree. She is linked to our Cystic Fibrosis (CF) team - this is a life-limiting condition. She is a "family support volunteer" visiting/supporting a young mum who has CF and a mum who has one-year-old twins who both have the condition. Dawn is calm and capable, acting on her initiative and reporting back to the team as appropriate. She brings a cheerful can-do attitude which helps these service users to feel understood and supported by someone who is very trustworthy. She is a asset to the team and I hope she will continue to volunteer with us for a long time to come!
Family Support Volunteer with the Cystic Fibrosis team. She is currently placed with 2 service users (see above), visiting them regularly and providing practical support and advice.
Dawn's dependability, commitment and cheerfulness are inspirational. The service users she is supporting face all sorts of challenges and issues. Dawn is not cowed by whatever crops up, but remains calm and provides stability and reassurance to these 2 families.
Dawn is a great asset to the team. When people are working with life-limited illness and needy service users in an economically challenging environment, it is easy sometime to become dispirited. Knowing that people are willing to partner with us in this work, and to do so cheerfully and in a non-demanding way is a real boost. We wish we had more volunteers of her calibre!
