What motivated you to become a mentor?

Greg Broughton

Greg Broughton
(Mentor of the Year, 2008/09)
Environment Manager
Environment Agency

I have enjoyed supporting my employees in their career development and get great satisfaction from seeing them develop and move onwards and upwards. I felt I would like to do something similar with students at the beginning of their careers and joined the Scheme in 2008.

What activities did you organise for your mentee?

  • General discussions on how our organisation works
  • Days out with job shadowing our field teams
  • Sessions looking at her CV
  • Carrying out mock job interviews and feedback sessions
  • Discussions on capabilities and areas for development.

What did you find most enjoyable?

Finding out the background of the mentee and her strengths and weaknesses in order to carve out a development plan and then observe the improvements.

What were the outcomes for you/your organisation?

  • Getting an insight into a foreign cultures
  • Making contacts with other mentors and the University of Derby
  • I also learnt a few things about my own style of mentoring and areas to improve.

Would you do it again?

Yes

What advice would you give to potential mentors?

Organise meetings well in advance and give good directions. Both support and challenge the mentee in what they are trying to achieve. Enjoy it.
